Magnepan's speaker design, sold under the brand name Magneplanar, differs from that of conventional speakers in relying not on cones mounted in a box but on a planar system mounted in a panel. A Magneplanar's reproducing mechanism comprises thin conductive strips attached to a thin sheet of PET film residing in a magnetic field created by a grid of permanent magnets. When an amplified signal is applied to the strips, the resultant electromagnetic forces react with the permanent magnetic field to vibrate the PET film sheet, which projects sound as a dipole. In principle, this approach relies on the same concept as a voice coil-driven cone speaker, but in a Magneplanar speaker the "voice coil" is applied flat directly to the radiating surface. The most frequently claimed benefit of this design is the creation of a sharp, precise, and 'large' soundstage through an extremely short response-to-signal time. The most frequently cited disadvantages of this design are relatively low sensitivity and difficulty, given the absence of a box enclosure, in reproducing very low bass frequencies, leading some owners to use their Magneplanar speakers in conjunction with subwoofers. The Magneplanar speaker is a dipole speaker - since it is not in a box like many speakers, sound comes from the front and the back of the radiating surface. Martin-Login has addressed the bass problem by mounting a conventional bass driver and speaker (i.e. , woofer or sub-woofer) in a separate section of the speaker chassis, generally resulting in a physically smaller speaker than the Magneplanar. Gli svantaggi di questo sistema consistono nella bassa sensibilità, che unita al valore di impedenza d'ingresso di 4 ohm rispetto al più diffuso valore di 8 ohm, comporta l'impiego di amplificatori di buona potenza. In campo audiofilo vi sono divergenze di opinione sulla necessità di aggiungere un subwoofer da integrare nel sistema per supplire la non estesissima escursione alle frequenze più basse, inoltre, se installate in in ambiente piccolo può sorgere un problema di posizionamento, infatti per ottenete la restituzione migliore della scena acustica originale, i diffusori necessitano di avere posteriormente un notevole volume d'aria, pertanto non a ridosso della parete di fondo. Anche il tweeter installati nei sistemi a tre vie dei diffusori magneplanar, differiscono dai normali tweeter a cono; sono costituiti da un nastro in alluminio dello spessore di pochi micron, largo un quarto di pollice e lungo molti decimetri, posizionato anch'esso tra magneti permanenti.
