- Maggie MacNeal . After her first solo record in 1971, she teamed up with Willem Duyn, and the duo became known as Mouth & MacNeal. After their breakup, Maggie formed her own group in 1975 with her husband Frans Smit (drums, ex-Brainbox and Mouth & MacNeal), Adri de Hont (g, ex-Mayflower, to Music Garden), Ben Vermeulen (o,p, ex-Album, to Match) and Wil de Meyer (b, ex-Rob Hoeke). In 1977, the line-up changed to: Frans Smit (dr), Jons Pistoor (o,p, ex-Free & Easy, to Bruno Basta), Lex Bolderdijk (g, ex-Gamma, to Beuk Brothers and Margriet Eshuys Band) and Robert Verwey (bass, ex-Long Tall Ernie & Shakers). In 1980, Maggie participated in the Eurovision Song Contest. Since 2000, she has been a member of the Dutch Divas, together with Marga Built (ex-Babe). Maggie MacNeal, who was dumped from the Mouth & MacNeal duo in 1974, made a strong comeback as a solo-artist. She had a few hits in English, such as When You're Gone and Fools Together, and in Dutch, most notably Amsterdam and Terug Naar De Kust. In those days she was the only Dutch artist to have a recording contract with the American Warner Brothers record label. In 1980, she wrote Amsterdam with her husband Frans Smit (lyrics by Alex Alberts). She did an impressive performance in The Hague, finishing fifth. Although she continued to write and record songs, Maggie never regained the popularity she had in the 1970s. Her final album was released in 1989. In the early 1990s she hosted a karaoke-show on Dutch television. - Maggie MacNeal ist eine Sängerin, die vor allem als Mitglied des Duos Mouth & MacNeal bekannt wurde. Nach einem Achtungserfolg mit der Single I Heard It Through The Grapevine bildete sie 1971 mit dem Sänger Willem Duyn das Gesangs-Duo Mouth & MacNeal, das in den folgenden Jahren mehrere internationale Hits hatte, darunter die Titel How Do You Do? und Hello-A. 1974 belegten die beiden als Vertreter der Niederlande mit I See A Star den dritten Platz beim Eurovision Song Contest. Bald danach trennte sich das Duo und Maggie MacNeal nahm ab 1975 eine Reihe von Solo-Platten auf. Sie erreichte die niederländische Top Ten mit den Singles Terug Naar De Kust und When You're Gone (einer späteren Nummer 1 in Brasilien). Internationale Aufmerksamkeit bescherte ihr 1980 der fünfte Platz beim Eurovision Song Contest mit dem Titel Amsterdam, der jedoch in ihrer Heimat mit Platz 33 nur mäßigen Erfolg hatte. Danach wurde es ruhiger um Maggie MacNeal, die im Jahr 2000 mit Marga Bult und Sandra Reemer die Gruppe Dutch Divas bildete, die gegenwärtig - nach dem Ausscheiden von Reemer - nur noch als Duo auftritt. Maggie MacNeal war 32 Jahre mit dem 2005 verstorbenen Frans Smit, einem ehemaligen Schlagzeuger der Gruppe Brainbox, verheiratet, der auf zahlreichen ihrer Solo-Platten als Musiker oder Co-Autor beteiligt war. Eine gemeinsame Tochter wurde 1984 geboren.
