MagLev is the name of an upcoming Ruby virtual machine under development by GemStone. Based on GemStone's Smalltalk Virtual machine, MagLev compiles Ruby to bytecode, which is then compiled to native machine code using a just-in-time compiler. MagLev was first revealed publicly at RailsConf 2008. It is currently undergoing private alpha testing, with a beta release scheduled for second quarter 2009.
