The Macintosh Application Environment (MAE) was a software package introduced by Apple Computer in 1994 which allowed users of certain Unix-based computer workstations to run Apple Macintosh application software. MAE used the X Window System to emulate a Macintosh Finder-style graphical user interface. The last version, MAE 3.0, was compatible with System 7.5.3. MAE was available for Sun Microsystems SPARCstation and Hewlett-Packard systems. It was discontinued on May 14, 1998.

Der Emulator lief in einem einzigen X11-Fenster, d.h. es gab keine Möglichkeit, einzelne MacOS-Fenster in einzelnen X11-Fenstern darzustellen ("seamless"). Zum Datenaustausch zwischen Emulator (MAE) und Wirts-System (X11) standen (virtuelles) Netzwerk, gemeinsam genutzte Dateisysteme und die Zwischenablage zur Auswahl. Druckerausgabe (auf Postscript-Drucker), Tonausgabe und Grafikausgabe über Quicktime wurden unterstützt. Der Zugriff auf Disketten und CD-ROMs war vom emulierten MacOS aus möglich. Laut "MAE 3.0 White Paper" verwendet der zugrundeliegende 68k-Emulator dynamische Compilierung. Am 14. Mai 1998 wurde das Programm eingestellt.
