- M2M refers to data communications between machines. M2M is most commonly translated as Machine-to-Machine but has sometimes been translated as Man-to-Machine, Machine-to-Man, Machine-to-Mobile and Mobile-to-Machine. Among cellular telephone service providers, M2M means Mobile-to-Mobile, and is used to describe calls that do not involve land lines. Like all evolving technologies, its definition continues to evolve, but it generally refers to telemetry or telematics that is accomplished using networks, especially public wireless networks. In the past, telemetry systems were the exclusive domain of very large well financed organizations. NASA used telemetry extensively from the very beginning of the space program and which was probably one of the first applications. Large oil and gas companies and electric utilities, through the use of extensive customer built dedicated data networks, were a couple of the first private organizations to use telemetry. M2M can also mean the family of sensors, middleware, software and applications that help improve efficiency and quality by tying together a myriad of sensors with mission critical applications like asset management, ERP, and CRM. In recent years, the cost of access to public wireless data networks has been dropping while the capabilities of these networks continues to increase. M2M generally refers to technology that leverages these networks to bring telemetry to a much wider audience. In addition, M2M sometimes refers to similar leveraging of the internet. In this case, the term is more or less equivalent to another term, Pervasive Internet. As the scope of M2M has evolved, other terms like Machine to Human (M2H) and Machine to Enterprise (M2E) are starting to emerge to segment the pervasive nature of the M2M term. The M2M device, software, network, and service market is expected to grow rapidly world wide between now and 2010. Some estimates suggest the 2010 world market may exceed $300B in annual revenue. Where as there are some half billion computers in the world and over one and a half billion cell phones & PDAs, it is estimated there are more than 38 billion other electronic devices that have information perhaps relevant to improving an enterprises operation. The M2M market strives to connect these devices to corporations, governments and institutions.
- Machine-to-Machine (kurz M2M) steht für den automatisierten Informationsaustausch zwischen Endgeräten wie Maschinen, Automaten, Fahrzeugen oder Containern mit einer zentralen Leitstelle. So ist auch die Fernüberwachung, -kontrolle und -wartung von Maschinen, Anlagen und Systemen möglich, die traditionell als Telemetrie bezeichnet wird. Die M2M-Technologie verknüpft Informations- und Kommunikationstechnik mit der Mikrosystemtechnik sowie Logistik. So entsteht ein Internet intelligenter Dinge – das so genannte „Internet der Dinge“. M2M-Lösungen können in jedem Wirtschaftszweig Arbeitsabläufe rationalisieren und zu Produktivitätssteigungen führen. In der Vending-Wirtschaft melden sich zum Beispiel Verkaufsautomaten selbstständig bei einem zentralen Rechner, wenn sie neu bestückt werden müssen. Regelfahrten des Automatenbetreibers können so vermieden werden. Darüber hinaus kommt es zur Vermeidung von Ausfallzeiten. Die damit verbundenen Rationalisierungen der Geschäftsprozesse und die daraus folgenden Kosteneinsparungen bergen für die Industrie – und auch für die Gesellschaft – ein riesiges Potenzial (siehe Marktpotenzial). Im Rahmen der Initiative „Informationsgesellschaft Deutschland 2010“ (iD2010) und des Forschungsförderungsprogramms “IKT 2020“ werden für das Internet der Dinge und die M2M-Kommunikation ein besonderer Forschungsbedarf und signifikante Chancen für die Wirtschaft gesehen.

Por una parte implementa el protocolo para poder comunicarse con la máquina y por otra parte implementa el protocolo de comunicación para el envío de información. - Servidor: Ordenador que gestiona el envío y recepción de información de las máquinas que gestiona. Habitualmente está integrado además con el core business de la empresa (ERP, Mapas GIS de trazabilidad de flotas de camiones, Sistema de pedidos, Centrales receptoras de alarmas, Helpdesk, …) de modo que la información recibida pasa a ser parte crítica del negocio. - Red de comunicación: pueden ser de dos naturalezas principalmente, a través de cable: PLC, Ethernet, RTC, RDSI, ADSL … o bien a través de redes inalámbricas: GSM/UMTS/HSDPA, Wifi, Bluetooth, RFID, Zigbee, UWB, …
- Le concept de machine to machine, abrégé par le signe M2M utilise les télécommunications et l'informatique pour permettre des communications entre machines, et ceci sans intervention humaine. En français, le M2M désigne de manière commune « la communication de machine à machine », « la communication entre machines » ou encore « la communication intermachines » (en anglais Machine to Machine, mais parfois aussi le Man to Machine, Machine to Man, Machine to Mobile et Mobile to Machine). Une définition plus générale de « la communication machine à machine » est l'association des technologies de l'information et de la communication (abréviation TIC), avec des objets dits intelligents et communicants et cela dans le but de fournir à ces derniers les moyens d'interagir sans intervention humaine avec le système d'information. Ce dernier peut appartenir indifféremment à une organisation ou à une entreprise. Comme toutes les technologies qui émergent, sa définition continue d'évoluer mais elle se réfère généralement à la télémétrie ou à la télématique. - M2M ノルウェーのマリオン・レイヴンおよびマリット・ラーセンによる女性音楽グループ。詳細はマリオン・レイヴンの項参照。 ネットワークに繋がれた機械同士によるネットワークセントリックなシステムの略称。本項で詳述。 M2M（エムツーエム、Machine-to-MachineまたはMachine-to-Managementの略）とは、ネットワークに繋がれた機械同士が人間を介在せずに相互に情報交換し、自動的に最適な制御が行われるシステムを指す。 情報通信ネットワークと通信技術・通信機器の発達、およびリモートセンシング技術や情報処理システムの高度化により初めて可能となるシステムで、ユビキタスコンピューティングの成果の一つである。通信機器が小型化され各種の装置に容易に組み込むことが可能になったこと、オンラインネットワークが国中の隅々まで張り巡らされたこと、さらには無線通信技術の発展などの多様な技術がM2Mを支える土台となっている。 最も単純なものとして、プロパンガス供給装置にセンサーを取り付け、リアルタイムで消費量をガス会社に送るM2Mシステムのモデルを考えてみる。ガス会社は情報に基づきガスが無くなる時期を自動的に計算する。同時に近隣の情報も全て計算し、最適のタイミングかつ最適の配送ルートでガスボンベの交換が出来るように各配送所に情報を送る。旧来の方法では、現場の経験と勘で行う為、ガスが無くなるのを恐れて交換サイクルが早くなり、またボンベの残量にかかわらず近隣の供給装置のボンベを一括して交換する方法になりがちである。持ち帰ったボンベには新たにガスを充填するが、なかには半分以上ガスが入っているボンベも出てきてしまうので、無駄な作業が増えることになる。M2Mを利用することで、情報をリアルタイムで確認できるようになり、計算に基づく効率的な作業が可能となる。また、単なるボンベ交換の効率化にとどまらず、消費量が一定の計算値を超えている場合にはガス漏れの警報を出したり、他のネットワーク経由で近隣の火災情報が入った場合に遠隔操作でガスの供給を一時的に停止する等の処理も技術的に可能である。 泥棒の侵入を知らせる防警報装置、自動販売機の缶コーヒーの在庫切れを知らせる装置などに使われている。
