- The MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA) were established in 1994 by MTV Networks Europe to celebrate the most popular music videos in Europe. Originally beginning as an alternative to the American MTV Video Music Awards, the MTV Europe Music Awards is today a popular celebration of what MTV viewers consider the best in music. Unlike the VMAs, most of the awards are voted for by the viewers. The MTV Europe Music Awards always changes its host city. Up until now United Kingdom hosted the event thrice. Germany will host the event for a fourth time in 2009 when the awards will be held in Berlin. The awards are presented annually and broadcast live on MTV Europe, MTV and most of the international MTV channels as well as online. To date, Eminem has won the most awards with 8 (including one with D12) in total. He is followed by Britney Spears with 7 awards, Justin Timberlake, Muse, The Prodigy with 5 awards, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Linkin Park, Backstreet Boys, Madonna, Robbie Williams, Dima Bilan and Coldplay with 4 awards, Limp Bizkit, Spice Girls, Alicia Keys, Jennifer Lopez, Kane, Gorillaz, Oasis, Justice, and 30 Seconds to Mars with 3 awards.

La prima edizione degli MTV Europe Music Awards si è tenuta nel 1994. In origine questo premio era stato pensato in alternativa agli americani MTV Video Music Awards. Oggi la trasmissione è diventata molto popolare in tutto il mondo. Gli MTV Europe Music Awards si tengono ogni anno in una diversa città europea. La premiazione viene trasmessa ogni anno dal vivo da MTV, e tra i premi assegnati ve n'è uno per il miglior artista di ogni paese europeo in cui è trasmessa l'emittente televisiva musicale. Generalmente i premi sono assegnati tramite votazioni sul sito ufficiale, in cui gli utenti possono votare i loro artisti preferiti per la candidatura e successivamente decretare il vincitore di ogni categoria. Istnieje kategoria dodatkowa Free Your Mind (Otwórz swój umysł)- przyznawana nie za osiągnięcia muzyczne. Nagrodą Free Your Mind, MTV pragnie uświadamiać społeczeństwo w kluczowych kwestiach społecznych. Od 1998 przyznawane są nagrody w kilkunastu dodatkowych kategoriach regionalnych, w tym Najlepszy polski wykonawca. Sukcesywnie MTV zwiększa liczbę nagród regionalnych. W 2007 roku przyznano po raz pierwszy nagrodę dla najlepszego arabskiego artysty. W 2005 nagrodzono po raz pierwszy najlepszego artystę afrykańskiego co stanowi swoiste wyjście poza ściśle rozumiany kontynent europejski. Najwięcej statuetek MTV zdobył Eminem (9- wliczając nagrody otrzymane z D12).
