The channel is MTV UK's dedicated dance music channel with music videos and programming of underground and mainstream dance tracks. MTV Dance was for many years available only on the UK, the Ireland and some German cable Providers. Later, it became a separate thematic music channel only for the subscribers of Sky Digital UK and timeshared for a while with Nick Jr. (UK) every evening between 19:00 and 06:00. However, it has since gained its own channel and started broadcasting 24 hours from 13 August 2002. On March 7 2008, MTV Dance replaced the European feed of MTV Base UK on the Astra satellite and is therefore now available to the whole continent that previous carried MTV Base UK. During the early 00s, the only available competitor for the dance music television market in the UK & Ireland was Rapture TV. Since 2006, Flaunt became the main competitor . In early 2008, Clubland TV was launched to compete with MTV Dance. Currently, Clubland TV has 5 times the number of viewers that MTV Dance has.

Der Sender wird trotz der inhaltlichen Fokussierung auf Großbritannien (es werden britische Werbespots und Programmhinweise auf rein britische MTV-Schwesterprogramme gezeigt) europaweit vermarktet; in Deutschland seit dem 7. März 2008 über das sogenannte MTV Tune Inn-Paket. Zuvor wurde auf dem Programmplatz die paneuropäische Version des Urban-Contemporary-Musiksenders MTV Base ausgestrahlt.
