L'histoire de Mġarr est celle d'une petite communauté agricole, possédée tour à tour par quelques familles de Mdina, et qui fut, au fil du temps, séparée en lots donnés en héritages aux descendants des propirétaires. Aujourd'hui, le village, quoique grand, est toujours comnsidéré un village de campagne où il fait bon vivre, où l'air est pur et où la pollution des villes industrielles de Malte ne se rend pas. On y trouve plusieurs coins rustiques, comme Bingemma, Wardija, Fomm ir-Rih et Gnejna Bay. Mġarr est de ce fait un endroit où les touristes aiment passer, dans leur recherche d'espaces campagnards calmes ou comme halte lors de leurs déplacements vers les plages situées tout près. Il aura fallu attendre jusqu'au début du vingtième siècle pour que le village ait sa propre paroisse et son église complètement construite. Cette dernière possède l'un des plus larges dômes du monde, après celle de Mosta. Sa forme unique, ovale, est attribuée à la façon dont les fonds nécessaires à sa construction ont été récoltés: via les profits de la vente d'oeufs produits localement. Plus de 300 000 œufs furent vendus afin de financer le projet, qui, bien que débuté en 1912, ne fut terminé qu'en 1946. C'est que la construction de l'église, dédiée à Sainte-Marie l'Assomption, dépendait du bon vouloir de travailleurs bénévoles et des généreuses contributions des paroissiens qui donnèrent ce que la vente des produits de la ferme leur rapportait.
