Luis Egidio Meléndez was a Spanish painter. Although he received little acclaim during his lifetime and died in poverty, Meléndez is recognized today as the greatest Spanish still-life painter of the eighteenth century. His mastery of composition and light, and his remarkable ability to convey the volume and texture of individual objects enabled him to transform the most mundane of kitchen fare into powerful images.

Per treure'l de les seves penes, la Casa Real li va encaregar una extensa serie de bodegons, de les quals es conservan varies decenes en el Museo del Prado. En contraste con su actual reputación, conoció una gran miseria. Su padre y Louis Michel van Loo (1707-1771) lo formaron como pintor. Fue asistente de Van Loo de 1742 a 1748. A fin de paliar sus penurias, la Casa Real le encargó una extensa serie de bodegones, de la que se conservan varias decenas en el Museo del Prado. Dejó un extraordinario autorretrato, con el que demostró que era igualmente diestro pintando la figura humana; de hecho, el estudio de desnudo que sostiene en su mano se interpreta como una demostración de sus facultades. De todas formas, su especialidad fueron los bodegones, que actualmente alcanzan cotizaciones astronómicas en el mercado internacional. Il fait presque toute sa carrière à Madrid et est considéré comme l'un des meilleurs peintres de nature morte du XVIII siècle. Malgré sa réputation, il connaît une grande misère. C'est son père Francisco Meléndez et Louis Michel van Loo (1707-1771) qui le forment à la peinture. Il est l'assistant de van Loo de 1742 à 1748. Il a séjourné en Italie de 1748 à 1752.

Najpierw terminował u ojca – królewskiego miniaturzysty Francisca Antonia Melendeza, a następnie u Louisa Michela van Loo. W l. 1748-52 przebywał w Rzymie i Neapolu. Po powrocie do Madrytu pracował jako miniaturzysta. Malował martwe natury utrzymane w tradycji Zurbarana i Velasqueza. W l. 1760-1773 wykonał cykl 44 martwych natur do pałacu Karola III w Aranjuez. Choć był najwybitniejszym hiszpańskim malarzem martwych natur w XVIII w. umarł w biedzie.
