Low Dietsch is a term mainly used within the Flemish terminology for the transitional Limburgish–Ripuarian dialects of a number of towns and villages in the north-east of the Belgian province of Liege, such as Gemmenich, Homburg, Montzen and Welkenraedt. This region, lying within the Belgian three frontiers area stretching from Voeren towards Eupen, crossing Plombières, is called the Low Dietsch area.

This region, lying within the Belgian three frontiers area stretching from Voeren towards Eupen, crossing Plombières, is called the Low Dietsch area. German dialectologists tend to roughly count this variety as Ripuarian Franconian, but more precisely it shows the gradual transition between Low Franconian Limburgish and West Central German Ripuarian. It belongs to the whole range of Meuse-Rhenish varieties that make the north-western part of the greater fan-like dialect continuum called the Rhenish fan. As the most periphere variety of southern Limburgish, it represents the language of the old Duchy of Limburg, that had its historic kernel just there.

Le premier considère que le carolingien est un dialecte limbourgeois, nommé alors "limbourgeois du sud-ouest" ou "limbourgeois des Trois frontières" (en référence à son étendue géographique). Le second soutient qu'il s'agit d'une langue au sens propre, entre le ripuaire et le limbourgeois (et donc indépendant de ce dernier). Un argument plaidant en faveur de la deuxième hypothèse est la construction des phrases, qui est typiquement romane. Le débat a ce sujet n'est pas exempt de politique, vu la situation délicate des Fourons (où il est notamment parlé) en tant que commune à facilité du Limbourg flamand.
