After being rejected by many American record labels they signed with Columbia/CBS Records Canada and began recording their first album March 20, 1980 with Mike Reno on lead vocals, Paul Dean as the guitarist, Scott Smith as the bassist, Doug Johnson on keyboards and Matt Frenette on drums. The band's hit singles, particularly "Turn Me Loose" and "Working for the Weekend", have become arena rock staples and are still heard on many classic rock radio stations across the United States and Canada. They are currently based in Vancouver, British Columbia.

De groep is opgericht in Toronto en kreeg al snel een platendeal bij CBS Records. Hun eerste drie albums werden geproduceerd door Bruce Fairbarn. Omdat Fairbarn met Bon Jovi ging samenwerken, kreeg Loverboy voor hun vierde album, Lovin' every minute of it, hulp van producer Tom Allom van Judas Priest. Met een harder geluid hadden ze commercieel gezien minder succes dan tevoren, hoewel ook dit album platina werd. Fairbairn kwam terug voor het volgende album, maar de samenwerking leverde niet de gewenste successen op. Na een lange tournee werd in 1989 een verzamelalbum uitgebracht en in datzelfde jaar maakten Mike Reno en Paul Dean bekend solo verder te willen gaan. Dit zorgde ervoor dat de band uit elkaar viel om pas in 1997 weer bij elkaar te komen. In 2000 hield de band weer op te bestaan toen Scott Smith verdronk tijdens een boottocht.
