Al contrario de su predecesora, Luisa aprendió a hablar el danés e hizo pública su decisión de educar a sus hijos en ese idioma, lo que la hizo popular entre sus súbditos. Tuvo que padecer el carácter libertino del rey, refugiándose en el cuidado de sus hijos y en obras de beneficencia. Tras sólo cinco años como reina, falleció repentinamente durante su sexto embarazo, en 1751, en el Palacio de Christianborg. Fue sepultada en la Catedral de Roskilde. Sus pequeños hijos quedaron al cuidado de su hermana María de Gran Bretaña, quien se desplazó desde Hesse-Kassel hacia Dinamarca.
