Louis se envolvió en el jazz muy de joven y perfeccionó su técnica con la trompeta simulando sus ídolos del momento, Louis Armstrong o King Oliver hasta llegar a encontrar empleo en un local de Nueva Orleans de vocalista y trompetista, esto lo consiguió a la corta edad de 17 años. En los años 30 se unió a la vocalista Red Nichols para formar el grupo "New Orleans Gang", que contenía a otros siete músicos. Durante esta época grabó más de 70 canciones, entre ellas figura sing, sing, sing. En el año 1936 apareció en el cine, en una película musical llamada Rythmn on the Range dirigida por Bing Crosby, además apareció en otras películas como actor menor por ejemplo Rose of Washington Square. En la década de los 40 formaba parte de una big band y con ella compuso unas de las canciones más famosa de Louis como Angelina o Civilization. Durante este tiempo residió en la ciudad de Las Vegas.
