Louis Lachenal, a French climber born in Annecy, was one of the first two mountaineers to climb a summit of more than 8,000 meters. On 3 June 1950, along with Maurice Herzog, he reached the summit of Annapurna I in Nepal at a height of 8,091 m (26,545 ft). Previously he had made the second ascent of the North Face of the Eiger in 1947, with Lionel Terray. He died while skiing in Chamonix.

Ihm gelang 1946 gemeinsam mit Lionel Terray die zweite Begehung der Eiger-Nordwand. Ende November 1955 zog sich Lachenal während der Abfahrt durch das Vallée Blanche bei Chamonix durch einen Sturz in eine 25 Meter tiefe Gletscherspalte tödliche Verletzungen zu. Zu Ehren seiner zahlreichen Erstbegehungen im Mont-Blanc-Massiv wurde ein 3613 m hoher Gratausläufer des Mont Blanc du Tacul nach Louis Lachenal benannt. Auf den Pointe Lachenal führen heute über zehn Kletterrouten.

Dal 1946 al 1949 compì alcune memorabili scalate: lo sperone Walker alla Nord delle Grandes Jorasses, la ovest della Blaitière, la nord-est del Badile, la ovest dellAiguille du Plan. la sua caratteristica principale, oltre alla perfezione stilistica ed estetica, era la velocità di arrampicata. Nel 1950 prese parte alla vittoriosa spedizione francese all'Annapurna; insieme al compagno Herzog furono i primi uomini ad arrivare in vetta ad un ottomila, ma il tributo che dovette pagare fu pesantissimo: congelamenti ampi e diffusi alle mani e soprattutto ai talloni che furono parzialmente amputati. Gli fu conferita la Croce di Cavaliere della Legion d'Onore. Dopo 3 anni di calvario e 14 operazioni ai piedi ed ai talloni, riuscì, con grande sforzo di volontà a riprendere il lavoro di guida e maestro di sci, nonostante le mutilazioni. Riuscì anche, aiutato dagli amici, a compiere ascensioni non semplice come la "sud della Noire" di Peutérey ed il "canalone Marinelli" sul Monte Rosa. Morì nel 1955 in un crepaccio della Vallée Blanche nel Monte Bianco.
