It has been a university since 1966, but the institution dates back to 1909, when the then Loughborough Technical Institute began with a focus on skills and knowledge which would be directly applicable in the wider world, a tradition which continues to this day, with the UNIEI funded Annual Survey on University Technology Transfer Activities finding Loughborough to be the most efficient technology transfer operation in the UK.

In 1952 was Loughborough College verdeeld in vier aparte instituten: Loughborough College of Technology, Loughborough Teacher Training College (werd in 1963 Loughborough College of Education), Loughborough College of Art and Design en Loughborough Technical College. Meer dan 17.000 full time studenten studeren aan de universiteit en de campus is met zijn 165 hectare een van de grootsten van het land. De universiteit staat internationaal bekend om haar prestaties en mogelijkheden op sportgebied. Bovendien staat het onderwijs en onderzoek ook hoog aangeschreven, getuige een zesde plaats in de lijst van Britse universiteiten volgens The Times Good University Guide" 2006, waarbij vooral hoog werd gescoord op tevredenheid van de studenten. Op 11 maart 2007 werd om 2.45 op de Campus van Loughborough University een student neergeschoten na afloop van een concert van de Amerikaanse RnB-groep Pretty Ricky, waarbij zeven mensen in het ziekenhuis belandden, het slachtoffer werd geraakt in de buik maar verkeerde buiten levensgevaar.
