Jahrhunderte immer weiter beschnitten worden ist. Eine besonders wichtige Rolle spielte der Lord President während des Zweiten Weltkriegs als Vorsitzender des Lord President's Committee, das mit den ökonomischen Problemen befasst war, die die Verteidigung des Landes hervorriefen. Ganz wesentlich trug dieses Komitee zum Erfolg der britischen Kriegswirtschaft und schließlich der Kriegbemühungen bei.
