Born in New York City, she made her Broadway debut in George M! in 1968, then replaced Bernadette Peters in the hit off-Broadway production of Dames at Sea. In 1971, Ackerman was cast in the revival of No, No Nanette as one of the three gold diggers chasing the title character's guardian.

Ackerman occasionally performs her act of 1930s and 40s standards in Manhattan cabarets. Ackerman is married to Broadway sound designer Steve Canyon Kennedy.
