- Einsamer Wolf ist eine 12-teilige (im englischen Original 28-teilige) Spielbuch-Reihe, geschaffen von Joe Dever. Die ersten acht Bände der Reihe wurden von Gary Chalk, alle weiteren Teile von Brian Williams illustriert. Die Reihe wurde ab 1984 zuerst in England und noch im selben Jahr in Deutschland veröffentlicht. Sie ist eine der erfolgreichsten Spielbuch-Serien, und bis heute wurden weltweit über 10 Millionen Exemplare verkauft. Die Geschichte spielt auf der eigenständigen Fantasywelt Magnamund, wo die Mächte von Gut und Böse in einem epischen Krieg aufeinandertreffen und um die Vorherrschaft auf dem Planeten kämpfen. Die Hauptfigur ist Einsamer Wolf, der letzte Überlebende eines Ordens von Kriegermönchen, den Kai-Lords. Die Bücher sind in der zweiten Person geschrieben und erzählen somit die Abenteuer von Einsamer Wolf als wäre der Leser selbst die Hauptfigur. Als Einsamer Wolf muss der Leser in jedem Buch regelmäßig Entscheidungen treffen, die den Verlauf und den Ausgang der Handlung beeinflussen. Während die deutsche Auflage nach Band 12 Anfang der 1990er Jahre vom Goldmann Verlag eingestellt wurde, brachte es die Reihe in England bis zu ihrer Einstellung im Jahre 1998 auf 28 Bände. Seit 2007 werden die Bücher in einer vom Autor überarbeiteten und erweiterten Fassung von Moongoose Publishing in England wieder aufgelegt und durch Rich Longmore und Nathan Furman komplett neu illustriert. Dabei soll die Reihe, so wie es ursprünglich auch geplant war, von 28 auf 32 Bände erweitert werden. Diese überarbeitete Neuauflage wird seit April 2009 durch den Mantikore-Verlag auch in Deutschland veröffentlicht. Der Verlag hat angekündigt alle 32 Bände der Reihe in deutscher Sprache herauszubringen. In England existiert zudem ein Rollenspiel von Einsamer Wolf, das auf dem d20-System basiert. Die Arbeiten an einem Computerspiel, das auf dem ersten Band der Reihe basiert und von Ksatria Gameworks entwickelt wurde, mussten aus finanziellen Gründen im Februar 2009 eingestellt werden.

The series began publishing in July 1984 and sold more than 10.2 million copies worldwide. The story focuses on the fictional world of Magnamund, where the forces of good and evil fight for control of the planet. The protagonist is Lone Wolf, last of his caste of warrior monks known as Kai Lords. The book series is written in the second person and recounts Lone Wolf's adventures as if the reader is the main character. As Lone Wolf, the reader makes choices at regular intervals throughout the story which then change the course, and the final outcome, of the book. Although the series ceased publication and went out of print in 1998, a fan-operated organisation called Project Aon was established in 1999 which has subsequently converted many of the books to HTML format. Joe Dever gave his permission for Project Aon to distribute the books online via the internet. Subsequently, there has been a strong revival of interest in Lone Wolf, particularly in Italy, Spain, and France where the books were republished between 2002 and 2006. In 2007, Mongoose Publishing has announced that all of the Lone Wolf books, including books 29-32 which were never published, are being printed. Several adaptations also exist of the Lone Wolf series, including a D20-style role-playing game from Mongoose Publishing Ltd UK, the company which is currently republishing the original Lone Wolf gamebooks. The series was also converted into computer games. There is also an upcoming Lone Wolf computer game and mobile phone game. However, Ksatria Gameworks, the developer of this new video game, had to close its doors in February 2009 due to a lack of funding. Red Entertainment, maker of the Gungrave video games, has since revived the project. In July 2009, Convergence Entertainment, a company best known for the live action King of Fighters film, announced that it had secured the rights to make a live-action movie based on the Lone Wolf series.

La serie comenzó a publicarse en julio de 1984 y se convirtió en uno de los libros juego más populares, llegando a venderse 9 millones de copias por todo el mundo. En España llegaron a editarse los primeros once números. La historia se centra en el mundo imaginario de Magnamund, donde las fuerzas del bien y del mal luchan por controlarlo. El protagonista es Lobo Solitario, el último de una casta de monjes-guerreros conocidos como los Señores del Kai. Los libros están escritos en segunda persona y recorren las aventuras de Lobo Solitario como si el lector fuese el protagonista. Como Lobo Solitario, el lector debe elegir sus acciones según se desarrolla la historia, con sus consecuentes repercusiones sobre el curso y final de la aventura. Cada libro de la serie puede ser leído/jugado por separado, pero fueron diseñados de tal modo que los conocimientos y los objetos adquiridos en episodios anteriores pueden ser conservados y utilizados en los posteriores. Cada libro tiene un objetivo único, aunque la trama lleva una correlación cronológica. Aunque los libros dejaron de publicarse en 1998, al año siguiente se estableció un archivo de libre acceso en red (Proyecto Aon-Project Aon), que ha ido recopilando en formato HTML toda la serie con permiso del autor. Por ello, ha surgido de nuevo un interés especial por Lobo Solitario, sobre todo en Italia, Francia y España, donde los libros fueron reeditados entre 2002-2006. Existen diversas adaptaciones de Lobo Solitario, incluyendo juegos de Rol. La compañía Mongoose Publishing Ltd del Reino Unido planea redistribuir además los libros en verano de 2007. Un juego de ordenador y otro en formato para teléfonos móviles se está diseñando para salir al mercado en 2008. Lobo Solitario marcó un hito en el campo de los libros juego por permitir el desarrollo del protagonista a lo largo de la serie (otra famosa fue La Búsqueda del Grial, del autor J.H. Brennan). Dever ha concesso l'autorizzazione alla libera pubblicazione e distribuzione online tramite internet di alcuni suoi librogame, tra cui l'intera serie di Lupo Solitario a Project Aon, sito creato da un gruppo di volontari appassionati. Nell'edizione 2006 della manifestazione Lucca Comics & Games l'autore, ripresosi da una malattia, ha annunciato la conclusione della serie di librogame, che in origine dovevano essere 32, l'uscita nei prossimi anni di un videogioco su Lupo Solitario (successivamente annullato) e la rivisitazione di tutti i 28 volumi da egli stesso scritti con l'aggiunta di nuove parti ed una narrazione più approfondita della storia. Un anno più tardi, durante lo stesso evento è stato presentato il nuovo numero uno della serie "expanded", che ha mantenuto il titolo originale, I Signori delle Tenebre, sempre edito dalla EL. Nei prossimi mesi, successivamente alle ristampe pubblicate dalla Mongoose Publishing sul mercato inglese continueranno ad uscire anche in Italia i volumi della "expanded edition", per arrivare gradualmente alla conclusione della serie.
