Lola versus Powerman is a satirical look at the various facets of the music industry including song publishers ("Denmark Street"), unions ("Get Back in Line"), the hitmaking machine ("Top of the Pops"), accountants and business managers ("The Moneygoround") and the road ("This Time Tomorrow"). Musically, the album is varied, contrasting gentle ballads like "Get Back in Line" and "A Long Way From Home" against hard rock songs like "Rats" and "Powerman", with "Denmark Street" and "The Moneygoround", paying homage to the English music hall tradition. The song Lola is about an encounter with a transvestite. Encouraged by his father, Davies consciously and carefully crafted the song to be a hit after a long dry spell for the band on both the U.K. and U.S. charts. Davies had to overdub the trademarked word "Coca-Cola" with the generic "cherry-cola" for the single release as product placement rules meant the BBC would not have played it. Although the lyrics in the gatefold sleeve of the original LP use the "cherry-cola" line, the album actually contains the original "Coca-Cola" version. The success of the single and album allowed them to negotiate a new contract with RCA Records, construct their own London Studio and assume more creative and managerial control, and helped them regain a footing in the U.S. concert market after the American Federation of Musicians, who had refused permits for the group to perform concerts there since 1965, relented in 1969.

Das bekannteste Lied des Albums, „Lola“, erschien bereits am 12. Juni 1970 in England als Single: Der weltweite Hit (Nr. 2 in England und Deutschland und Nr. 9 in den USA) galt zum Zeitpunkt der Veröffentlichung als anstößig, da Ray Davies über eine sexuelle Beziehung zwischen einem Transvestiten und einem heterosexuellen Mann sang - angeblich inspiriert von einem persönlichem Erlebnis. Aber nicht deshalb erwog die BBC das Lied auf den Index zu setzen, sondern wegen vermuteter Schleichwerbung für Coca-Cola in der einleitenden Strophe der Album-Version des Songs: „... where you drink champagne and it tastes just like Coca-Cola... “. Für die Single-Version wurde deshalb „Coca-Cola“ durch „Cherry-Cola“ ersetzt. Auch die nächste Single-Auskoppelung, die Aussteigerphantasie „Apeman“, erreichte Platz 5 der englischen Charts (Platz 9 in Deutschland). Der Erfolg der Singles und des von der Kritik wieder einmal sehr positiv aufgenommenen Albums, das - für eine Kinks-Veröffentlichung sehr ungewöhnlich - sich ihn den USA deutlich besser verkaufte als in England, ermöglichte der Band einen neuen Vertrag mit RCA Records, der der Band zukünftig mehr Mitspracherecht einräumte. Erstmals auf einem Kinks-Album zu hören ist der Organist und Pianist John Gosling.

Zároveň jsou důkazem umělecké síly Raye Daviese.
