The majority are the "gladly apart", along with the "regretfully apart" (due to work commitments, family responsibilities, legal or residency requirements, or other reasons) and the "undecidedly apart" (committed but not especially moving towards cohabitation at the time).

Sembla que és un fenomen creixent sobretot després de relacions de convivència fallides, però sorgeix també com un nou compromís de parella que busca no anular les individualitats com sovint passa en la convencional cohabitació.

Voor deze relatievorm wordt meestal gekozen als beide partners hun zelfstandigheid niet willen opgeven. Het latrelatie-verschijnsel is vooral sinds de jaren zestig verspreid. De minnaars zijn in principe ongehuwd tenzij met een andere partner waarvan ze nog niet wettelijk gescheiden zijn. LAT is een afkorting van de Engelse woorden living apart together ('samen apart wonen'). Hoewel het een afkorting is van Engelse woorden, is het begrip in de Engelstalige wereld onbekend. Het heeft een Nederlandse oorsprong: de film Frank en Eva/Living apart together van de filmregisseur Pim de la Parra uit 1973. Al in de jaren zeventig was het een gangbaar begrip in Nederland; sociologen hebben het rond 1980 overgenomen. Buiten het Nederlandse taalgebied geniet het begrip lat enige bekendheid in het Duits. Beroemde voorbeelden van latrelaties zijn deze tussen de Franse schrijfster George Sand en de componist Frédéric Chopin en tussen de schrijver-filosoof Jean-Paul Sartre en de feministische schrijfster Simone de Beauvoir.
