Heute gilt 'Live' at the Apollo als eines der besten Live-Alben aller Zeiten und ist ein allgemein anerkannter Klassiker der populären Musik. So erreichte es auf der 2003 vom Rolling Stone veröffentlichten Liste der 500 besten Alben aller Zeiten Platz 24 und war damit das höchstplatzierte Live-Album auf der Liste. Anfangs wollten King Records sich weigern 'Live' at the Apollo zu veröffentlichen in der Annahme, ein Live-Album, auf dem keine neuen Songs enthalten waren, könne unmöglich Profit bringen. Brown, der die Aufnahmen mit seinem eigenem Geld produziert hatte, schaffte es jedoch schließlich das Label umzustimmen, indem er sich eine Zeit lang weigerte Aufnahmen für King Records zu machen und stattdessen bei Smash Records veröffentlichte. Das Album entwickelte sich jedoch überraschend zum Megaseller, was so weit ging, dass manche Radiosender die beiden Seiten der LP in voller Länge spielten. Gerade in Zeiten, in denen die Musikverkäufe noch von Singles dominiert wurden, war dieser Erfolg ausgesprochen ungewöhnlich. Trotz des damals so großen Erfolges des Albums wurde 'Live' at the Apollo erst 1990 von Polydor erstmals auf CD veröffentlicht, da die Masterbänder zunächst nicht auffindbar waren und erst 1989 wiederentdeckt wurden. Am 23. März 2004 erschien dann auf Polydor eine weitere Version des Albums mit Bonustracks.
