Every post town has one or more postcode districts, for example PE2. These are also called postal districts or outward codes. In rural areas a postcode district may cover more than one post town. A group of postcode districts with the same alphabetical prefix is called a postcode area, for example YO. The Royal Mail recommends that in addresses the post town should be written in capitals. Since 1996 former postal counties no longer form part of a full correct postal address.
