As there is no objective criteria for "greatness", the persistance of later generations in using the designtation gretly varies. For example, Louis XIV of France was often refered to as "The Great" in his lifetime, but rarely nowadays, while Frederick the Great of Prussia is still often so designated up to the present. But a later Hohenzollern - Wilhelm I, German Emperor - was often called "The Great" in the time of his granson Wilhelm II, but rarely later.
