- A hypothetical Solar System object is a planet, natural satellite or similar body in our Solar System whose existence is not known, but has been inferred from observational scientific evidence. Over the years a number of hypothetical planets have been proposed, and many have been disproved. Some were proposed early in philosophical history, and perhaps belong more to protoscience than science. However, even today there is scientific speculation about the possibility of planets yet unknown that may exist beyond the range of our current knowledge.

- Un pianeta ipotetico è un pianeta o corpo planetario la cui esistenza è o è stata ritenuta possibile, ma non vi sono prove al riguardo. Vi sono diversi pianeti la cui esistenza non è oggi sostenuta da dati o teorie scientifiche. Non di meno, vi sono credenze occasionali, di volta in volta mitologiche, pseudoscientifiche, cospirative o di gruppi religiosi, che accettano tali ipotesi come fondate e "scientifiche". In alcuni casi erano gli stessi astronomi che, incapaci di spiegare le anomalie dell'orbita di un determinato corpo celeste, ipotizzavano l'esistenza di un "nuovo" pianeta che avrebbe potuto provocarle, almeno fino a quando non veniva trovata una spiegazione scientifica più corretta. I pianeti ipotetici si distinguono dai pianeti immaginari della fantascienza per il fatto che questi gruppi credono o hanno creduto nella loro reale esistenza.

- Speculatieve planeten zijn planeten waarvan het bestaan gesuggereerd of geloofd werd/wordt, zonder dat daar een uitsluitend bewijs voor gevonden is. Omdat de veronderstelde massa en grootte vaak maar beperkt gekend is, kan het ook gaan om dwergplaneten en planetoïden. Enkele voorbeelden van zulke planeten: Theia, die volgens de Grote Inslagtheorie vernietigd werd in een botsing met de aarde. Vulcanus, die zich binnen de baan van Mercurius zou moeten bevinden om afwijkingen in de baan van Mercurius te verklaren. Planeet X, de "tiende planeet", voorbij Pluto. Sinds 24 augustus 2006 wordt Pluto niet meer als een volwaardige planeet maar slechts als dwergplaneet bestempeld. Zou er alsnog een echte, volwaardige planeet gevonden worden, dan zou dat de negende planeet worden. Phaeton, die zou vernietigd zijn waarbij de planetoïdengordel tussen Mars en Jupiter zou uit zijn ontstaan. Planeet V, die zich tussen Mars en de planetoïdengordel zou hebben bevonden en de Late Heavy Bombardment veroorzaakt zou hebben. In de oudheid werd ook een aantal speculatieve planeten voorgesteld: De Tegenaarde, in het Grieks gekend als "Antichthon", dit zou een aardachtige planeet moeten zijn aan de andere zijde van 'het centrale vuur', hiermee werd, oorspronkelijk althans, niet de zon bedoeld. Het idee werd eerst voorgesteld door Pythagoras, en later gebruikt door John Norman als decor voor zijn Gor-romans. Nibiru/Marduk en Tiamat, twee planeten uit de Sumerische mythologie die in botsing zouden zijn gekomen waardoor de aarde werd gevormd. Omdat exoplaneten indirect worden aangetoond worden deze ook vaak als speculatief of hypothetisch gezien.
