  • A magyar egyetemeken, főiskolákon és kutatóintézetekben a hazai szokások és jogrend alapján az oktatói-kutatói pályának – emelkedő hierarchia szerint – az alábbi négy beosztását (tulajdonképpen valójában ezek címek) különböztetik meg: Főiskolákon főiskolai tanársegéd főiskolai adjunktus főiskolai docens főiskolai tanár Egyetemeken egyetemi tanársegéd egyetemi adjunktus egyetemi docens egyetemi tanár Kutatóintézetekben és egyetemeken levő akadémiai kutatóhelyeken tudományos segédmunkatárs tudományos munkatárs vagy tudományos kutató tudományos főmunkatárs tudományos tanácsadó – feltétele az akadémia doktori cím, vagyis DSc. kutatóprofesszor - feltétele a Magyar Tudományos Akadémia levelező tagsága Az azonos sorszámú egyetemi és kutatóintézeti fokozatok azonos fizetési osztályt jelentenek, a főiskolai fokozatok ezekhez képest eggyel alacsonyabb fizetési osztályt. Az egyetemi tanár jogosult a professzori cím használatára. E beosztás feltétele a habilitáció, amely (egyes egyetemeken csak summa cum laude) PhD fokozatát Magyarországon legalább öt éve (de Bajorországban például két éve) megszerzett, megfelelő számú tudományos publikációkkal és citációs indexszel rendelkező diplomás számára nyitott lehetőség. A beosztás az egyes oktatók heti óraszámát is meghatározza: a legtöbb órát a tanársegédnek kell adnia, a legkevesebbet pedig az egyetemi tanárnak. (Azonban a nagyelőadásokat általában a professzoroknak illik tartani. ) Nevek megadásakor előbb általában a tudományos fokozatot, majd a nevet s a beosztást adják meg (például Dr. X. Y. docens. ) Kivétel ez alól a professzorok kötelező megszólítása: Igen tisztelt Prof. Dr. X. Y. De szokásos a beszélt nyelvben az X. Y. professzor forma is.

Si distingue tra le cariche direttamente associate all'attività di docenza o ricerca (Cariche Accademiche) e quelle di natura gestionale amministrativa, più facilmente ottenute dopo nomina o elezione (Cariche Amministrative). Non per tutti i sistemi è possibile associare ad ogni carica il suo equivalente nel modello universitario italiano.
