India has submitted films for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film since 1957, the second appearance of the regular Foreign Oscar award. It was created for the 29th Academy Awards1956 Academy Awards, in which a competitive Academy Award of Merit, known as the Best Foreign Language Film Award, was created for non-English speaking films, and has been given annually since. India has sent a total of 43 films to the competition, more than almost any other country and second only to Japan outside of Europe. Since 1984, they have missed out on only a single year, when they controversially chose not to send a film in 2003. As of 2008, three Indian films have been nominees for Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, but no Indian film has won the award. Famed Bengali peopleBengali director Satyajit Ray has represented India in the competition three times- more than any other director- although none of his films were nominated for an Oscar.
