Lions' Commentary on UNIX 6th Edition, with Source Code by John Lions contains the complete source code of the 6th Edition Unix kernel plus a commentary. It is commonly referred to as the Lions book. Despite its age, it is still considered an excellent commentary on simple but high quality code. For many years, the Lions Book was the only Unix kernel documentation available outside Bell Labs.

For many years, the Lions Book was the only Unix kernel documentation available outside Bell Labs. Although the license of 6th Edition allowed classroom use of the source code, the license of 7th Edition specifically excluded such use, so the book spread by samizdat. It was commonly held to be the most copied book in computer science. The book was reprinted in 1996 by Peer-To-Peer Communications.
  • Unter Lions Book versteht man den Quellcode des Betriebssystems Unix-V6 mit zusätzlichen Kommentaren von John Lions. 1976 schrieb Professor John Lions von der University of New South Wales in Australien ausführliche Kommentare in den Quellcode von Unix-V6, den seine Universität zu Lehrzwecken lizenziert hatte. Er verwendete dieses Werk in seinen Vorlesungen. Ein Exemplar stellte er AT&T zur Verfügung, die es für internen Gebrauch nachdruckten. John Lions erhielt die Erlaubnis, seine Kommentare - fortan 'Lions Book' genannt - anderen Universitäten, die eine Sourcelizenz hatten, zur Verfügung zu stellen. 1979 änderte AT&T seine Meinung und untersagte die Verbreitung des Buchs. Zu dieser Zeit waren allerdings - völlig legal - schon so viele Exemplare in der Welt, dass sich eine Weiterverbreitung über Samisdat nicht vermeiden ließ. Erst 1996 gab es wieder eine offizielle Ausgabe - unter anderem auch auf Betreiben von Dennis Ritchie. Ironischerweise war zu dieser Zeit SCO Lizenzeigentümer. Ken Thompson bezeichnete das Buch selbst noch nach dieser langen Zeit als die beste Beschreibung der Unix-Interna. Das Verbot des Buchs war ein Anstoß für Andrew S. Tanenbaum, Minix zu entwickeln, damit er für seine Vorlesungen Material hatte. Problematik der Weiterverteilung: Obwohl AT&T formal im Recht war, empfanden es viele legale Eigner des Buchs als unrichtig, anderen Instituten den Zugang zu dieser einmaligen Quelle zu verwehren - zumal ja AT&T selbst das Buch für interne Zwecke nutzte. Ein Unrechtsbewusstsein entstand unter diesen Umständen nicht. AT&T hat es (klugerweise) auch vermieden, gegen diesen Samisdat energische rechtliche Schritte zu unternehmen. Schaden: Bis heute ist kein Fall bekannt worden, in welchem das Buch dazu missbraucht wurde, ein illegales Unix zu schreiben und dadurch den Lizenzeigentümern von Unix Schaden zugefügt hat. Nutzen: Unzählige Programmierer haben anhand des Buchs Kernelprogrammierung gelernt. Davon haben auch die kommerziellen Unix-Hersteller profitiert.

Część pierwsza zawierała pełny listing kodu dostępnej za darmo w celach akademickich 6 edycji Uniksa AT&T, część druga była komentarzem wiersz po wierszu do zamieszczonego kodu. Zwany często najbardziej prześladowaną książką w historii informatyki, ze względu na restrykcje w dostępie do niej nałożone przez Western Electric/AT&T, właściciela praw do kodu Uniksa. Rozprowadzana przez hakerów w nielegalnie powielanych kopiach. To za jej przyczyną Unix stał się tym, czym jest dzisiaj. Bez niej nie byłoby także całej związanej z nim wspólnoty ludzi. Retrospektywna reedycja ukazała się w 1996 roku z przedmową twórców Uniksa, Dennisa Ritchie i Kena Thompsona.
