- Limoniidae is a family of flies closely related to the crane flies Tipulidae although they can usually be distinguished by the way the wings are held at rest. Limoniids usually hold/fold the wings along the back of the body whereas tipulids usually hold them out at right angles. Members of the genus Chionea (snow flies) have no wings at all. Limoniids are also usually smaller than tipulids, although there are exceptions. Limoniidae is a very large family with nearly 11000 described species in 150 genera. These flies are found in damp places throughout the world and many species form dense swarms in suitable habitats. Mostly, larvae are aquatic or semi-aquatic. The majority of Tipulidae larvae in comparison, are terrestrial though some are aquatic and found in huge numbers in lotic habitats like the limoniid larvae. Various species have evolved to feed on different food sources so there are phytophagous, saprophagous, mycetophagous and predatory species. Limoniids are not particularly common in amber deposits but a few finds suggest the family has been extant since the Cretaceous period at the latest.

Limonia vaak met opvallende tekening op de vleugels; Thaumastoptera; Chionea het enige vleugelloze geslacht; Dicranomya valt op door steeds met vleugels te trillen; Er is weinig bekend over steltmuggen wat voortplanting betreft, eitjes worden afgelegd in water, de grond en in plantaardig afval. De vliegtijd is van herfst tot lente.
- Småstankelbein (Limnoniidae), er en artsrik familie som ligner storstankelbein (Tipulidae), men kan skilles fra disse på detaljer i vingeårenettet, der åren subcosta (Sc) munner ut i costa (C). Munnfølerne (palpene) er ganske korte. Fra familien Pediciidae kan de skilles på at de mangler hår mellom fasettene i fasettøynene.
- Комары-лимонииды, или болотницы — большое семейство двукрылых чьими родственниками являются комары-долгоножки (Tipulidae). В семействе луговок более 140 родов в которых описано 11 000 видов. Члены рода хионеи, или бескрылые комары (Chionea) не имеют крыльев вообще, от чего и произошло русское название.
