The word liènǚ (列女 "famous women in history") is cognate with liènǚ (烈女 " women martyrs"), which Neo-Confucianists used to mean "woman who commits suicide after her husband's death rather than remarry; woman who dies defending her honor". The online Chinese Text Initiative at the University of Virginia provides an outstanding e-text edition of the Lienu Zhuan, including both digitized Chinese content and images of a Song Dynasty woodblock edition with illustrations by Gu Kaizhi 顧凱之 (ca. 344-405 CE) of the Jin Dynasty.   • 列女伝（れつじょでん）は、中国の前漢の劉向によって撰せられた女性の史伝を集めた歴史書。女訓書としての性格が強い。劉向の原著は7篇構成で、のちに本文の7篇を上下に分け、劉歆の撰と伝わる頌1巻を加えた15巻構成となり、曹大家（班昭）の註が加えられた。現行本は南宋の蔡驥による再編本で、原著の7巻に頌文を分かち加え、『続列女伝』を加えた8巻構成となる。 漢の班昭・馬融、魏の虞韙の妻の趙氏、晋の綦毋邃らによる註があったが、いずれも散逸した。清の王照円の『古列女伝補注』、顧広圻の『古列女伝考証』、梁端の『列女伝校注』がある。 また明治時代に松本万年の注釈『参訂劉向列女伝』がある。
