It was formed in 2005 by the merger of the international arm of Liberty Media and UGC (UnitedGlobalCom), and is one of the largest broadband providers outside of the United States. As of September 30, 2012, it had an annual revenue of $10.1 billion, 21,000 employees in 13 countries, including 11 in Europe.

On 15 April, EU regulatory approval for the deal was granted, the final hurdle in the acquisition. In January 2013, the firm raised its stake in Telenet from 50.2% to 58%.
