Sie gehörte zu den führenden Kräften im Bemühen um die Ausdehnung des Wahlrechts. 1888 spaltete sich die „Moderate Venstre“ ab und wurde zur dritten Partei im Storting. Ihre Themenfelder waren Abstinenzlertum, Moral und Religion. Man kann sie als Vorläuferin der Christlichen Volkspartei bezeichnen. Ihre Führungsfigur war Lars Oftedal, der die „Innere Missionsbewegung“ gründete. Als Oftedal sich 1891 mit den konservativen Høyre verbündete, kehrten viele Abgeordnete zur „Venstre“ zurück. Im Gegensatz zur Høyre trat die „Moderate Venstre“ für Ausweitung der Selbständigkeit Norwegens innerhalb der Union ein. Im Gegensatz zur Venstre, eine einseitige sofortige Auflösung der Union mit Schweden bevorzugte, wollte sie die Auflösung der Union auf dem Verhandlungswege erreichen. Als die Høyre ihre Haltung zur Union radikal änderte, verschmolz die „Moderate Venstre“ mit dieser zur „Samlingspartiet“, die nach 1905 zur „Frisinnede Venstre“ wurde. 1933 wurde sie zur „Frisinnede Folkeparti“ und löste sich 1945 zu Gunsten von „Høyre“ auf. 1972 spaltete sich die für einen EWG-Beitritt eintretende Liberale Volkspartei (Det liberale Folkeparti) ab. 1988 kam es zur Wiedervereinigung von DLF und Venstre. Venstre regierte von 2001 bis 2005 als kleinste Partei einer Mitte-Rechts-Minderheitskoalition zusammen mit der konservativen Høyre und den Christdemokraten Norwegen. Vorsitzender ist der ehemalige Landwirtschafts-Minister Lars Sponheim. Die Jugendorganisation der Partei sind die Jungen Liberalen Norwegens (Unge Venstre), deren Vorsitzende Anne Solsvik ist.
