He is best known for his work with the National Wrestling Alliance, World Championship Wrestling, and the World Wrestling Federation. Most recently, Luger has been traveling to various churches and giving his testimony about his life decision of becoming a "born again" Christian.

He received success in NWA/WCW as a two-time World Heavyweight Champion, five-time United States Heavyweight Champion, two-time World Television Champion, two-time World Tag Team Champion, one-time Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Champion and as the winner of the Jim Crockett, Sr. Memorial Cup Tag Team Tournament with Sting in 1988. Although he never won a title in the WWF, he was the co-winner of the 1994 Royal Rumble with Bret Hart. In World Wrestling All-Stars, he was a one-time World Heavyweight Champion, rendering him a three-time world champion overall.

Lo stesso giorno, tuttavia, il wrestler fu arrestato per possesso e uso di stupefacenti e steroidi; venne nuovamente arrestato nel 2005 per guida in stato di ebbrezza. Il 19 ottobre 2007 Luger ebbe dei seri problemi ad un nervo del collo, tali da restare parzialmente paralizzato. In un'intervista rilasciata ad una radio, l'ex wrestler e amico di Luger Nikita Koloff ha raccontato di come Lex, costretto su una sedia a rotelle, stia gradualmente migliorando: ha infatti ricominciato ad alzare entrambe le gambe, a muovere il dorso e a stringere una lattina in mano. Nel corso della stessa intervista, Koloff ha riportato una frase di Luger circa la possibilità di passare l'intera vita sulla sedia a rotelle: "[... ] and if I never walk again, I'll be the best wheelchairer for Jesus, you've ever seen. " (" e se non dovessi mai più camminare, sarò la migliore sedia a rotelle per Gesù che tu abbia mai visto"), ribadendo che la sua vita è ora dedicata al servizio di Dio.
