I det 15. århundre bygde den daværende sognepresten, Abraham Colfe, to skoler og seks fattighus der. Sentrum lå da lenger sør enn i dag, der Universitetsykehuset i Lewisham nå ligger. Flyttingen nordover kom etter 1849, da jernbanens ankomst gjorde det til et attraktivt sted for pendlere. I 1944 ble Lewisham bombet, med store ødeleggelser. En minneplakett om dette er satt opp ved Lewisham kjøpesenter, som åpnet i 1977. Deler av hovedgaten, High Street, som er spesielt bred og lang for en hovedgate i en Londonbydel, ble i 1994 gjort til gågate. Det avholdes et daglig gatemarked. Et lokalt landemerke, the Clock Tower, ble ferdigstilt i 1900 etter at konstruksjonen startet i forbindelse med dronning Victoria av Storbritannias diamantjubileum i 1897. Den nye politistasjonen, som åpnet i 2004 for å erstatte stasjonen i Ladywell, regnes som en av Europas største.
