Leuven is the capital of the province of Flemish Brabant in the Flemish Region, Belgium. It is located about 30 kilometers east of Brussels, with as other neighbouring cities Mechelen, Aarschot, Tienen, and Wavre. The township comprises the historical city of Leuven and the former municipalities of Heverlee, Kessel-Lo, a part of Korbeek-Lo, Wilsele and Wijgmaal.

Nel XV secolo per la città inizia una nuova era, grazie alla fondazione della più grande e più antica università del Belgio, l'Università di Lovanio (K.U. Leuven), che rappresenta anche la più antica università cattolica tuttora esistente, fondata nel 1425, con 25.000 studenti. Nel XVIII secolo divenne ancor più importante grazie ad un fiorente birrificio, oggi noto come InBev, che è divenuto il più grande del mondo e produce marche belghe come Stella Artois, Hoegaarden o Leffe ed altre come Labat o Beck's. Sempre nel XVIII secolo venne anche scavato il canale che porta fino a Malines. Nel XX secolo, entrambe le guerre mondiali inflissero gravi danni alla città, distruggendo la biblioteca dell'università per due volte. Il mondo fu indignato da questi episodi e la biblioteca venne completamente ricostruita dopo la prima guerra mondiale, grazie a donazioni dei fondi di beneficenza statunitensi e alle riparazioni di guerra tedesche. Dopo la seconda guerra mondiale l'edificio dovette essere restaurato nuovamente. Oggi è nuovamente in piedi, simbolo delle due terribili guerre e della solidarietà che seguì. Nel 1968, dopo violente dimostrazioni fiamminghe contro la proposta di assegnare alla città lo status di Bruxelles, i docenti francesi si separarono e formarono un'altra Università Cattolica di Lovanio (U.C. Lovain) a pochi km a sud, nella regione vallone. Allo scopo, fu creato il paese di Nuova Lovanio attorno al nuovo campus. Oggi Lovanio è una "città universitaria" da ottobre a giugno ed offre una delle migliori vite notturne del Belgio. L'università è considerata una delle migliori d'Europa. Lovanio è nota anche per il suo festival rock estivo, chiamato Marktrock. Nel locale ospedale si spense la sera dell'8 maggio 1982, Gilles Villeneuve, dopo un tragico incidente avvenuto nel pomeriggio nel vicino autodromo di Zolder, dove si svolgevano le prove del Gran Premio del Belgio di F1.
