Leopold IV Frederick, Duke of Anhalt was a German Prince member of the House of Ascania, ruler of the Duchy of Anhalt-Dessau and since 1863 the first ruler of the united Duchy of Anhalt. He was the eldest son of Frederick, Hereditary Prince of Anhalt-Dessau by his wife Christiane Amalie, daughter of Frederick V, Landgrave of Hesse-Homburg.

El dia 18 d'abril de l'any 1818 contragué matrimoni a Berlín amb la princesa Frederica de Prússia, filla del príncep Lluís de Prússia i de la duquessa Frederica de Mecklenburg-Strelitz. La parella tingué SA la princesa Augusta d'Anhalt, nada el 1819 a Dessau i morta el 1822 a Dessau. SA la princesa Frederica d'Anhalt, nada el 1824 a Dessau i morta el 1897 a Hummelshain. Es casà a Dessau el 1853 amb el duc Ernest I de Saxònia-Altenburg. SAR el duc Frederic I d'Anhalt, nat a Dessau el 1831 i mort a Ballenstedt el 1904. Es casà amb la princesa Antonieta de Saxònia-Altenburg. SA la princesa Maria Anna d'Anhalt, nada el 1837 a Dessau i morta el 1906 a Friederichroda. Es casà el 1854 a Berlín amb el príncep Frederic Carles de Prússia. L'any 1863, després que totes les branques de les diferents famílies que havien regnat des de l'Edat Mitjana els petits principats formats en el territori d'Anhalt s'extinguessin, el duc Leopold IV esdevingué duc d'Anhalt reunificant el territori històric i establint la capital a Dessau. L'any 1864 arran de l'inici de les hostilitats entre Àustria i Prússia pels ducats danesos i la posterior guerra austroprussiana, es posà al costat de Prússia, la qual cosa li permeté mantenir la sobirania del Ducat d'Anhalt. El duc Leopold IV d'Anhalt morí el 22 de maig de l'any 1871 a la ciutat de Dessau.

Hij was de oudste zoon van prins Frederik (1769-1814) en volgde op 9 augustus 1817 zijn grootvader Leopold III Frederik Frans op als hertog van Anhalt-Dessau. In 1818 trad hij in het huwelijk met Frederika, dochter van Louis van Pruisen, bij wie hij vier kinderen verwekte. Toen met hertog Hendrik in 1847 de linie Anhalt-Köthen uitstierf viel deze staat toe aan familiehoofd Leopold. In het revolutiejaar 1848 zag hij zich genoodzaakt zijn onderdanen een constitutie te verlenen, die hij echter op 4 november 1849 weer ophief. Hij verenigde op 22 mei 1853 Anhalt-Dessau en Anhalt-Köthen tot Anhalt-Dessau-Köthen. Na de kinderloze dood van Alexander Karel van Anhalt-Bernburg kwam in 1863 ook Bernburg aan Leopold, die nu de titel van hertog van Anhalt aannam. De eerste algemene Anhaltse landdag werd op 26 november 1863 geopend. In de Pruisisch-Oostenrijkse Oorlog van 1866 stond het land aan de zijde van Pruisen. Leopold stierf op 22 mei 1871 en werd opgevolgd door zijn zoon Frederik I.
