Leopold Hoffer was an English chess player and journalist. He left Budapest for Switzerland. Since 1867, he lived in Paris, where won a few matches, among others against Ignatz von Kolisch, Samuel Rosenthal, Jules Arnous de Rivière, etc. In 1870, he came to England, where spent rest of his life. In 1879-1896, Hoffer was a founder and editor of The Chess Monthly.
