Leon Golub was an American painter. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, where he also studied, receiving his BA at the University of Chicago in 1942, his BFA and MFA at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1949 and 1950, respectively. He was married to and collaborated with the artist Nancy Spero. His son, Stephen Golub, is an economics professor at Swarthmore College.

Ausgehend von den Erfahrungen des Zweiten Weltkriegs entwickelte Golub eine Malerei, in der mit den Mitteln eines modernen Realismus soziale und politische Fragen kritisch artikuliert wurden. Golub thematisierte den Vietnamkrieg ebenso wie Folterpraktiken und zählt zu den profiliertesten Vertretern engagierter zeitgenössischer Kunst. Golub nahm drei Mal an der documenta in Kassel teil sowie an der 50 Biennale von Venedig, 2003.

Il a vécu et travaillé à New York jusqu'en 2004 où il meurt le 8 août des suites d'une longue maladie.
