A contemporary in Vilnius, his birthplace, of Felix Dzerzhinsky and Arkadi Kemer, little is known of Jogiches' early years due to his secretive work habits ingrained through years of conspiratorial work. He joined a social democratic workers circle before being forced into exile. In 1893 he helped form the Social Democratic Party of the Kingdom of Poland along with Rosa Luxemburg. Jogiches and Luxemburg fell in love with each other, a love that lasted their whole lives, through difficulties, and even if they never became a real couple. The work of the two cannot be separated in the least, although a clear division of labour is observable, with Jogiches the organiser and Luxemburg the theorist. Jogiches was a founding member of the Spartacus League, a revolutionary left-wing organization of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, formed at the beginning of World War I by Karl Liebknecht, Luxemburg, Franz Mehring and others. On 1 January 1919 the League became the Communist Party of Germany. The Spartacus League led the German communist revolution of 1918/1919, which failed, after which Luxemburg and Liebknecht were murdered by government troops. Jogiches was murdered in Berlin while trying to investigate the assassination of Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht.

- Leo Jogiches var en sosialistisk polsk-tysk politiker som var med på grunnleggingen av Det tyske kommunistpartiet KPD. Han ble født i det polske Vilna, som nå er Vilnius i Litauen. Jogiches stod Rosa Luxemburg nært og var medlem i Sosialdemokratiet i Kongeriket Polen og Litauen (SDKPIL). Han var skeptisk til bolsjevikenes linje i det russiske sosialdemokratiet. - Leo Jogiches, était un communiste polonais. Leo Jogiches s'engage très jeune dans l'action révolutionnaire, et en 1890 se voit contraint de quitter la Pologne alors sous domination russe. En 1893, il co-fonde le SDKPIL, parti marxiste de Pologne et de Lituanie. Il participe à la révolution russe de 1905, est arrêté à Varsovie en 1906 et condamné à 8 ans de travaux forcés. Il s'évade et se réfugie en Allemagne, en dirigeant le SDKPIL en exil. Au sein des partis "marxistes" de l'empire russe, Jogiches combat toute forme de nationalisme, et s'oppose à la fraction bolchevik du POSDR. En 1914, il s'oppose à la guerre mondiale et passe dans la clandestinité. Au cours de la guerre, il participe à la création de la Ligue spartakiste (Spartakusbund) avec Rosa Luxemburg et Karl Liebknecht. Les principaux militants spartakistes sont arrêtés pour "propagande anti-militariste", mais Jogiches, toujours en clandestinité, parvient à échapper aux arrestations. Il s'investit activement dans la révolution allemande dès son déclenchement en novembre 1918. Il participe, comme les autres spartakistes, à la création du Parti Communiste d'Allemagne (KPD) en décembre 1918, et fait partie de sa centrale de direction. Au cours de la révolution, les militants du KPD doivent faire face à une répression féroce, Rosa Luxemburg est assassinée en janvier 1919, et Leo Jogiches est à son tour arrêté et assassiné en prison le 10 mars 1919.
