- LensCrafters is a North American retailer of prescription eyewear, as well as non-prescription sunglasses. LensCrafters was formed in 1983 and has subsequently expanded to over 850 stores in Canada, the United States, and Puerto Rico. Like EyeMasters, the stores usually feature independent optometrists on-site (or in an adjacent store). They maintain corporate headquarters in Mason, Ohio, along with Sunglass Hut International; both firms are wholly owned subsidiaries of the Italian-based Luxottica. Lenscrafters was created by E. Dean Butler in 1983, a manager with Procter & Gamble. Mr Butler sold Lenscrafters to the U.S. Shoe Co in 1985 and remained as President until 1987. Bannus(Ban) Hudson replaced Mr. Butler as President and stayed through 1990. Mr Hudson became the CEO of US Shoe in 1990 and Dave Browne became the CEO of Lenscrafters.
