  • Leila Daw (born 1940) was an artist and art professor. Daw was born in Charleston, West Virginia. She received her Masters of Fine Arts from Washington University School of Fine Arts in St Louis, Missouri and her Bachelor of Arts from Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts. Daw was a professor of art from 1974 through 2002 at Tusculum College, Maryville College, Forest Park Community College, Southern Illinois University, and Massachusetts College of Art. Daw currently works and resides in Branford, Connecticut. Daw, an artist, “is best known for her public commissions, which include permanent installations at Hartford’s new Bradley International Airport terminal, Northwestern Connecticut State College’s new library, the St. Louis light rail system, the Massachusetts Turnpike, and others. ” Her work provokes contemplative thought on our use of the earth and draws upon possible calamitous events, which cause total devastation. Her work deals with issues surrounding geology, geography, landscape, sense of place, and human orientation within natural and cultural environments. “Additional mapping projects include drawings over ancient Native American sites in skywriting smoke, diaphanous installations of layered diagrams, intricate artists’ books and folded maps, environmental interventions, and mixed media two and three dimensional pieces. ” Over the years, Daw has incorporated a great diversity of materials into her work. “Since the early 1980’s she has used acrylic, pencil, bronzing powders, metal leaf, Mylar, foil, and other mixed media on paper and canvas in order to create maps that replicate the terrain in regions where she has lived-St. Louis and Boston-and traveled, by car, plane, and imagination, such as the American desert West. ” It was during the late 1970’s to the early 1980’s that Daw created a series of works, the Sky Projects. Through the use of skywriting smoke, Daw created “a series of repeatable sky drawings events over Midwestern geography, using skywriting smoke. ” One such project, Ancient City in the Sky, traced the Pre-Columbian city of Cahokia over its former site.
