Lega Pro Prima Divisione is the name of the third highest football league in Italy. It consists of 36 teams, divided geographically into two divisions of 18 teams each. Until 2008 it was known as Serie C1. Before the 1978-79 season there were only three leagues of professional football in Italy, the third being Serie C. In 1978, it was decided to split Serie C into Serie C1 and Serie C2.

During the regular season, teams play only other teams in their own division. Each opponent is played twice, once at home and once away, for a total of 34 matches. Games are scheduled such that in the first 17 matches, every opponent is played once. In the last 17 matches, the same opponents are played in the same order with the only difference being that the venue changes.

De Serie C1 is geografisch opgedeeld in twee verschillende girones (competities), de Serie C1/A en Serie C1/B. Beiden bestaan uit 18 teams. Aan het eind van het seizoen promoveren vier teams (twee uit beide girones) naar de Serie B, waarvan twee rechtstreeks en twee na play-offs tussen nummers 2 t/m 5. Drużyny zajmujące trzy ostatnie miejsca w grupie spadają bezpośrednio (zespół czwarty od końca gra w barażach o utrzymanie) do Serie C2 (4 Liga).

Започаткована в 1978 році, коли Серія C була розділена на два дивізіони: Серію C1 і Серію C2. Розіграш чемпіонату проводиться окремо в кожній зони. По результатам розіграшу дві команди від кожної зони переходять до Серії B. Найкращі команди кожної зони здобувають підвищення автоматично, а чотири команди в кожній зоні, які посіли місця з другого по п’яте, наприкінці сезону влаштовують між собою перехідний турнір (Play-off), переможець якого також потрапляє до Серії B. Три гірші команди кожної зони вибувають до Серії C2. Команди, що посіли останні місця, переходять туди автоматично; між командами, що закінчили чемпіонат на місцях з 14-то по 17-те, влаштовується перехідний турнір (Play-out), і до Серії C2 вибувають дві гірші команди цього турніру. Команди, які вибули з ліги, заміняють гірші команди Серії B і кращі команди Серії C2.
