Laura Nyro (born Laura Nigro) (October 18, 1947 – April 8, 1997) was an American composer, lyricist, singer, and pianist. Her style was a hybrid of Brill Building-style New York pop, jazz, gospel, rhythm and blues, show tunes and rock. She was best known, and enjoyed her most commercial success, as a composer and lyricist rather than as a performer.

Al op haar 8e begint ze met het zelf schrijven van nummers die ze stiekem in de badkamer oefende. Als 18-jarige vrouw speelt Laura regelmatig in de clubs in de New York regio en schrijft daar ook haar eerste album "More Than a New Discovery". Deze lp wordt in 1966 uitgebracht met liedjes als "Wedding Bell Blues" en "Blowin' Away". Van een paar van haar nummers wordt zelfs door Barbra Streisand nog een cover gemaakt. Op 24-jarige leeftijd kondigt Laura aan dat ze het rustiger aan gaat doen en dat ze op dat moment geen nummers meer gaat schrijven. Ze trouwt met de schilder David Bianchini en verhuist naar een klein dorpje in New England. Ze komt na haar scheiding in 1975 nog enkele keren terug op de podia maar haar muziek is stukken melancholieker geworden.
