- Latacunga is a plateau town of Ecuador, capital of the Cotopaxi Province, 89 km (55 miles) south of Quito, near the confluence of the Alaques and Cutuchi rivers to form the Patate, the headstream of the Pastaza. At the time of census 2001 Latacunga had 51,689 inhabitants, largely mestizo and indigenous. Latacunga is an hour and half south from Quito on the Pan-American Highway. It was previously also on the old road from Quito to Guayaquil, and has a railway station between those cities. It is 9,055 ft (2,760 m). above sea level. Its climate is cold and windy, due to the neighboring snowclad heights, and the barren, pumice-covered tableland on which it stands. The active volcano Cotopaxi is only 25 km. away, and the town has suffered repeatedly from eruptions. Founded in 1534, it was four times destroyed by earthquakes between 1698 and 1798. The neighboring ruins of an older native town are said to date from the Incas Empire. Latacunga's most noted food is chugchucaras, empanadas, plantains, popcorn, and tostado (a type of toasted corn. ) Often mixed with ají, a type of condiment that can be mild to very spicy depending on how it's prepared. The Latacunga economy is dependent on agriculture, and floriculture. It has an international airport that is not used for international passenger use, but as an Air Force base and some special commercial flights. The local volcanic activity has led to the accumulation of pumice deposits which are currently mined, as well as the presence of natural sparkling water, which is bottled under the brand name San Felipe. The airplane scene in the film Maria Full of Grace was filmed out of the Latacunga airport using local extras. The landscape seen from the plane is the area surrounding Latacunga.

Jahrhunderts mit ca. 20.000 Einwohnern zu den größten Orten der Real Audiencia de Quito. Die Stadt erlangte am 11. November 1820 ihre Unabhängigkeit, nachdem lokale Truppen die mit 60 Soldaten besetzte Kaserne der spanischen Truppen einnahmen. 1822 besuchte Simón Bolívar Latacunga, das zunächst zu Großkolumbien, seit 1830 zur Republik Ecuador gehörte. In Ecuador gehörte es zunächst zur Provinz Quito und wurde 1851 Hauptstadt der neuen Provinz León, die seit 1938 den Namen des Vulkans Cotopaxi trägt. Die Wirtschaft Latacungas ist von Landwirtschaft und Blumenanbau geprägt. Daneben wird der die Umgebung bedeckende vulkanische Bimsstein abgebaut und örtliches Quellwasser als Mineralwasser abgefüllt. Die Stadt hat einen internationalen Flughafen, der allerdings normalerweise nur als Luftwaffenbasis und als Ausweichflughafen für den Flughafen Quito dient, z.B. wenn in Quito aufgrund von Vulkanausbrüchen keine Flugzeuge landen können. In Latacunga gibt es einen Bahnhof an der teilweise zerstörten und nicht mehr regelmäßig bedienten Bahnstrecke von Quito nach Guayaquil. Am 30. Dezember 2008 befuhr erstmals seit 16 Jahren ein Zug die renovierte Teilstrecke vom Bahnhof Latacunga zum Bahnhof Chimbacalle in Quito. Der regelmäßige Verkehr soll 2009 wieder aufgenommen werden. Die bekannteste Attraktion sind der Vulkan Cotopaxi, die Mama Negra-Feiern. Bekannt ist auch das örtliche Gericht Chugchucara, das aus Schweinefleisch, Maismehl, Kochbananen, Empanadas und geröstetem Mais (tostadas) besteht.

Název města pochází z indiánského výrazu llacta cunani, což znamená místo, které jsem si vybral. Po španělské invazi v 16. století byla Latacunga významným koloniálním centrem, ale v současnosti zde nalezneme pouze málo známek zašlé slávy. Dominanta města, nedaleký vulkán Cotopaxi Latacungu třikrát výrazně poničil při sopečných erupcích v letech 1742, 1768 a 1877. Město bylo vždy znovu vystavěno. Většina historických budov byla zničena při erupcích Cotopaxi, v centru Latacungy můžete navštívit malé etnografické muzeum Molinos de Monserrat, radnici, katedrálu nebo rozkvetlý Park Vincenta Leóna. V centru města se nachází nezpočet turistických agentur, organizujících výstupy na nedaleké sopky.

Latacunga vormt de belangrijkste stad voor de dorpen in de omgeving die meer in de bergen gelegen zijn, zoals Saquisilí, Sígchos, Isinliví, Guantaló, Quilotoa en Pujuilí. Voor de markt op woensdag en zaterdag reizen de inheemse vrouwen naar Latacunga met door hun gekweekte gewassen. Veel mannen werken doordeweeks in Latacunga en keren in het weekend terug. Andersom reizen docenten maandagochtend af naar de dorpen, om in het weekend weer terug te keren naar de stad en hun gezin. Vanuit Latacunga vinden ook excursies plaats naar de vulkaan Cotopaxi en het kratermeer van Quilotoa. Veel toeristen reizen via Síchos naar Isinliví of Chugchilan, om vervolgens het kratermeer op te lopen.
