- Last and First Men: A Story of the Near and Far Future is a science fiction novel written in 1930 by the British author Olaf Stapledon. A work of unprecedented scale in the genre, it describes the history of humanity from the present onwards across two billion years and eighteen distinct human species, of which our own is the first and most primitive. Stapledon's conception of history is based on the Hegelian Dialectic, following a repetitive cycle with many varied civilizations rising from and descending back into savagery over millions of years, but it is also one of progress, as the later civilizations rise to far greater heights than the first. The book anticipates the science of genetic engineering, and is an early example of the fictional supermind; a consciousness composed of many telepathically-linked individuals. A controversial part of the book depicts humans, in the far-off future, escaping the dying Earth and settling on Venus—in the process totally exterminating its native inhabitants, a marine intelligent species. Stapledon's book has been interpreted by some as condoning such interplanetary genocide as a justified act if necessary for racial survival, though a number of Stapledon's partisans denied that such was his intention, arguing instead that Stapledon was merely showing that although mankind had advanced in a number of ways in the future, at bottom it still possessed the same capacity for savagery as it has always had. In 1932, Stapledon followed Last and First Men with the far less acclaimed Last Men in London. His other great novel, Star Maker (1937), could also be considered a sequel to Last and First Men, but is even more ambitious in scope, being a history of the entire universe.

Le propos du roman est philosophique, éthique, moral; c'est en quelque sorte à une philosophie de l'Histoire par l'illustration qu'est convié le lecteur. Ce dernier ne suivra pas à proprement parler les tribulations d'un individu, mais bien celles de l'"humanité" dans son ensemble, de guerres mondiales en républiques universelles, de civilisations en civilisations, et de l'extinction de toute une espèce à l'avènement de la suivante, en une lente, longue, douloureuse, émouvante et vertigineuse progression vers une certaine sagesse et une certaine idée de ce qu'est l'"humanité", entendue comme une qualité morale. En dépit d'un sujet particulièrement abstrait, Olaf Stapledon parvient à captiver le lecteur par une inventivité et une ampleur de vue prodigieuses, et à l'émouvoir en lui peignant - mais attention, à l'échelle cosmique ! - les souffrances et les joies des hommes, à quoi qu'ils pussent ressembler ou croire. Ce roman forme un triptyque avec deux autres romans de Stapledon : Last Men in London (1932) et Star Maker (1937). En effet, tous trois appartiennent à la même grande fresque décrivant l'histoire de la vie consciente dans l'univers. Star Maker est le plus ample : il couvre tout simplement l'Histoire de l'univers, c'est-à-dire, pour Stapledon, de ses espèces pensantes, soit quinze milliards d'années. L'histoire de l'humanité contée dans Last and First Men y est résumée en seulement onze lignes ! Enfin, Last Men in London est un zoom dans la matière de Last and First Men : ce dernier roman ne couvre "que" les quelques siècles prochains. Last and First Men est considéré, avec Star Maker, comme le meilleur roman d' Olaf Stapledon.

Przez niektórych jest ona interpretowana jako akceptacja ludobójstwa jako uzasadniony i niezbędny akt do przetrwania danej rasy. Jednak wielu stronników Stapledona twierdzi że jego intencje były inne. Miał on zamiar pokazać, że mimo szeregu zaawansowanych sposobów w przyszłości człowiek nadal będzie posiadał takie cechy jak brutalność.
