- Lasithi is the easternmost prefecture on the island of Crete, to the east of the prefecture of Heraklion. Its capital is Agios Nikolaos, the other major towns being Ierapetra, Sitia and Neapoli. The mountains include the Dikte to the west and the Sitia Mountains to the east. The Sea of Crete lies to the north and the Libyan Sea to the south. To the east of the village of Elounda lies the island of Spinalonga, formerly a Venetian fortress and a leper colony. On the foot of Mount Dikti lies the Lasithi Plateau, famous for its windmills. Vai is well-known for its datepalm forest. Thanks to stunning beaches and its mild climate year-long, Lasithi attracts many tourists. Mass tourism is served by places like Vai, Agios Nikolaos and the island of Chrissi. More off-beat tourism can be found in villages on the south coast like Myrtos, Makrys Gialos or Makrigialos, Xerokambos and Koutsouras. The prefecture is home to a number of ancient remains. Vasiliki, Fournu Korfi, Pyrgos, Zakros and Gournia are ruins of Minoan date, Lato and Itanos were Doric towns.

Bis zur Kommunalreform in Griechenland 1997 („Kapodistrias“) bestand die Präfektur aus den Provinzen Ierapetra, Lasithi, Mirabello und Sitia. Sie wurden abgelöst durch die Stadtgemeinden Agios Nikolaos, Ierapetra, Sitia, Lefki, Makrys Gialos, Neapoli, Itanos und Oropedio Lasithiou („Lasithi-Plateau“) und, seit 2006, die Landgemeinde Vrachasi. Die Gesamteinwohnerzahl betrug 2001 76.319. Die größten Städte sind Agios Nikolaos mit rund 10.900 Einwohnern, Ierapetra mit knapp 15.400 Einwohnern und Sitia mit gut 8.900 Einwohnern. Die Stadt Sitia gab der Präfektur während der venezianischen Zeit ihren Namen, der heutige Name stammt von dem Hochplateau in den Dikti-Bergen. Hauptwirtschaftszweige sind Landwirtschaft mit Treibhauskulturen um Ierapetra und extensivem Olivenanbau sowie der Tourismus. Die Präfektur ist die am geringsten touristisch erschlossene Kretas. Die Lasithi-Hochebene zählt zu den landschaftlich reizvollsten Regionen der Insel. Laut griechischer Mythologie erblickte der Göttervater Zeus in der Dikti-Grotte am südwestlichen Rand der Hochebene das Licht der Welt.

Altres grans ciutats són Ieràpetra, Sitia i Neàpoli. És la prefectura més oriental de l'illa, té a l'oest la prefectura d'Iràklio, el Mar de Creta al nord, i el mar de Líbia al sud. Té les muntanyes Dikti a l'oest, les muntanyes de Sitia a l'est. A l'est hi ha la població d'Elounda, i al seu davant hi ha l'illa de Spinalonga, un antic castell venecià que va ser una leproseria. In het departement wonen 76.319 inwoners (2001). Het gebied bedekt het meest oostelijke gedeelte van Kreta en grenst in het westen aan het departement Iraklion. De havenstadjes Agios Nikolaos en Sitia liggen aan de noordkust, en worden aangedaan door de veerboot van Rodos naar Kreta. Aan de zuidkust ligt Ierapetra, de meest zuidelijke stad van Europa. Ten noorden van Agios Nikolaos ligt het eiland Spinalonga, als toeristische trekpleister vooral bekend van een fort en een voormalige leprakolonie die zich daar bevindt. In het westelijk gedeelte, tegen de grens van het departement Iraklion, ligt het Diktigebergte, met als hoogste piek de berg Dikti (2148 meter). Tussen de bergtoppen ligt op 800 meter hoogte de Lassithihoogvlakte, bekend vanwege de vele windmolens. Hier is ook de Diktigrot te vinden, een van de vermeende geboorteplaatsen van Zeus. Vai, dat aan de oostkust ligt, geniet bekendheid vanwege een palmenstrand.
