The municipal seat is located some 25 km to the northeast of Comitán de Domínguez, while the municipality extends to the east as far as the border with Guatemala. Part of the Lagunas de Montebello National Park is in the municipality's territory.

Das Municipio hat 39.000 Einwohner, ist 5.307 km² groß und liegt 1.520 m ü. NN. Las Margaritas grenzt an die Gemeinden Ocosingo, Altamirano, Independencia, Maravilla Tenejapa, Chanal, Comitán de Domínguez und an das Land Guatemala.
  • Las Margaritas es una localidad del sureste de México, perteneciente al Estado de Chiapas. Fue erigida en pueblo y Cabecera Municipal mediante decreto del 9 de diciembre de 1871, promulgado por José Pantaleón Domínguez, Gobernador del Estado. La formación del pueblo se hizo con los habitantes de la entonces ranchería Las Margaritas, del departamento de Comitán. Fue el propio jefe político del Departamento quien hizo la delineación y demarcación del fundo legal del nuevo asentamiento, concediendo a cada familia de indígenas tojolabales suficientes tierras para casa y sitio. El 24 de marzo de 1981, la cabecera municipal fue elevada al rango de ciudad por decreto promulgado por el gobernador Juan Sabines Gutiérrez. En 1994 se convirtió en uno de los pueblos ocupados por el EZLN, en la Revolución de Chiapas.
