Der in Japan geborene Li wuchs in Hongkong auf und wurde 1911 Mitglied in Sun Yat-sens Kuomintang-Partei. 1913 war er gemeinsam mit Li Beihai an der Produktion des ersten in Hongkong entstandenen Films Zhuangzi prüft seine Frau (Zhuang shi qi) beteiligt. Li Minwei übernahm die Rolle der Ehefrau selbst, da zu jener Zeit noch keine Frauen im chinesischen Film auftraten. Seine Frau Yan Shanshan war in einer kleinen Rolle in diesem Film die erste Chinesin in einem Spielfilm. Von 1921 bis 1928 war er in Shanghai - dem Zentrum der chinesischen Filmindustrie - als Filmregisseur tätig. 1923 gründete er in Hongkong die Filmgesellschaft Minxin, die später nach Shanghai umzog. 1930 ging daraus die gemeinsam mit Luo Mingyou gegründete Filmproduktionsgesellschaft Lianhua hervor, die neben Mingxing die wichtigste chinesische Filmgesellschaft der 1930er Jahre wurde. 1938, nach dem Beginn des Japanisch-Chinesischen Kriegs, kehrte Li Minwei nach Hongkong zurück und setzte sich zur Ruhe. Über ihn drehte Choi Kai-kwong 2001 die Dokumentation Lai Man-wai: Father of Hong Kong Cinema. Li Minwei wurde in Stanley Kwans 1992er Filmbiografie über Ruan Lingyu Centre Stage von Waise Lee dargestellt.
  • 黎民偉（1893年－1953年），香港電影之父。祖籍廣東四會下埗黎寨村或新会会城都会。早年就讀聖保羅書院。 黎民偉早年積極参加孫中山的革命運動。後來更充當戰地記者，冒着生命危險把日軍侵華的事實以影片的方式記錄下來。又為了拍攝《莊子試妻》黎民偉讓元配妻子嚴姍姍饰演女角，是中國電影史上的第一位專業女演員。後又娶林楚楚為平妻，並讓林楚楚飾演女角。 黎民偉的電影製作非常認真，水平也極高。在1970年代至1980年代之前，他的電影成就是非常卓越的。
