- Labor omnia vincit is a common Latin phrase, meaning "Hard work conquers all". The phrase appears in Virgil's Georgics, Book I, in the form Labor omnia uicit improbus ("uphill work overcame all things"). The poem was written in support of Augustus Caesar's "Back to the land" policy, aimed at encouraging more Romans to become farmers. The phrase is the state motto of Oklahoma. It was also the motto of the American Federation of Labor, one of the first labor unions. Modern unions such as the International Union Of Operating Engineers and the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America carry on the tradition and incorporate the phrase into their logos. The phrase first appeared on the territorial seal of Oklahoma Territory, and was incorporated into the state seal in 1907. It appears on the flag of the Brotherhood of the Sleeping Car Porters, the labor union of African-American Pullman car porters founded by A. Philip Randolph in 1925. It was also the motto of the city of El Eulma, Algeria, and was shown on its coat of arms, of the City of Bradford, West Yorkshire, West Bromwich, England, and León, Guanajuato, Mexico as well as the football clubs Rasta IL in Norway and Luton Borough Youth in England. The motto is used by the Geelong Trades Hall Council in Australia. - Labor omnia vincit improbus est une locution latine signifiant en français « Un travail acharné vient à bout de tout ». Elle est reprise d'une phrase répartie sur deux vers de Virgile dans les Géorgiques, au livre I. La phrase originale est au parfait Labor omnia vicit improbus, Improbus étant renvoyé au début du vers suivant (du 145 au 146). Dans ce poème, les campagnes, le travail de la terre et les paysages bucoliques sont vantés. En effet, après des dizaines d'années de guerres civiles, les romains aspirant à la paix furent engagés par Auguste à s'installer dans les campagnes et à retrouver la ruralité perdue à la guerre. Labor omnia vincit improbus, en définitive, prône le goût du travail et de l'effort. La Chambre de Commerce, d'Industrie, d'Agriculture et des Métiers de Pointe-Noire, l'Ecole Royale Technique de la Force Aérienne Belge (Saffranberg), l'Ecole d'Etat-major général suisse l'ont adoptée comme devise ainsi que les éditions Res Universis spécialisées en histoire locale. Elle est aussi la devise de la famille princière roumaine Ghika (Ghica).
