Burning images on the top side of a disc requires specialized media. Specialized Labelflash discs use 0.6 mm thick top coating to avoid fading of image over time, and to protect from scratches. Discs are blue on top, thus providing greater contrast with the printed image. Current media is approximately twice the price of the similar Lightscribe technology; around €1 ($1.31, ¥116.97) per DVD DiskT@2 is a part of Labelflash technology — burning on bottom side (data side) of disc area which is not used by data is possible with any DVD±R media. Nero 7 and newer versions support this technology. All full versions of Nero 8 support Labelflash, but Nero 7 only supports it with OEM versions bundled with Labelflash-capable recorders and with Nero 7 Premium. For reasons that are not entirely clear, North American purchasers of Nero 7 (Ultra Edition) are not entitled to Labelflash or DiscT@2 support, even though the exact same software sold to European customers (Nero 7 Premium) includes both Labelflash and DiscT@2 functionality. The only difference between Nero 7 Premium and Nero 7 Ultra Edition appears to be the inclusion of (or lack of, respectively) support for Labelflash and DiscT@2.
  • Labelflash (LF) wird eine DVD-Rohlings-Beschriftungstechnik der Unternehmen Yamaha bzw. NEC bezeichnet. Anders als Lightscribe beschriftet Labelflash DVDs mit Hilfe einer Schicht in der Mitte zwischen Ober- und Unterseite. Dadurch ist die Beschriftung gegen Umwelteinflüsse geschützt. Es kann auch ein Teil der Datenseite einer DVD (zurzeit nur DVD-R bzw. DVD+R) zur Beschriftung herangezogen werden. Hierzu sind keine speziellen Medien, wie zur Beschriftung der Labelseite, notwendig. Hinsichtlich der Geschwindigkeit übertrifft Labelflash mit 7 Minuten die Lightscribe-Methode, welche etwa 15 Minuten benötigt. Labelflash beherrscht lediglich eine Blau-metallic-Beschriftung. Labelflash arbeitet mit einer Auflösung von 1000 dpi und erzielt 256 Helligkeitsabstufungen. Für Labelflash ist zusätzliche Software erforderlich, die mit dem Laufwerk bzw. dem PC zusammen ausgeliefert wird. Das Verfahren stammt von Yamaha (dort für CD-Rs DiscT@2 genannt) und wurde von NEC lizenziert. Benötigt wird also ein DVD-Brenner, der diese Technik unterstützt, ein Medium, das eine zusätzliche Schicht für die Farbgebung hat und eine Software, um die Grafikdaten an den Brenner zu senden. Passende DVD-Brenner gibt es bisher (2007) von Sony NEC Optiarc, TEAC, Quanta Storage und Pioneer. Entsprechende DVD-R-Medien zu einem Vielfachen des Normalpreises bietet FUJIFILM an. Nero (6.6.1.14 + 7.5.x. x Reloaded), Roxio WinOnCD 9, B's Recorder Gold, Ulead DVD Movie Factory, Cyberlink Labelprint 2, NTI Dragon Burn und Belight Disc Cover sind bisher in der Lage, Labelflash-Rohlinge über ein entsprechendes Plug-in zu bedrucken. Während einige der genannten Programme sowohl unter Windows als auch unter MacOS X laufen, fehlt bislang eine Linux-Lösung. Seit März 2007 wurde auf der offiziellen Labelflash-Seite auch ein Programm zum Beschriften von entsprechenden Rohlingen angeboten. Dieses Programm steht jetzt 2009 nicht mehr zur Verfügung. Auch Rohlinge sind sehr selten zu bekommen.

Podobna technologia jest również LightScribe autorstwa Hewlett-Packard. Rozdzielczość wydruku to 1000 dpi. Używa 256 odcieni szarości. Labelflash wykorzystuje promień lasera do etykietowania płyt optycznych. Cechą charakterystyczną jest możliwość wypalania obrazów zarówno na stronie wolnej, jak i na stronie z danymi (oczywiście kosztem miejsca na dane). Nadruk na stronie danych odbywa się na dowolnej płycie DVD. Nadruk na stronie wierzchniej wymaga specjalnych płyt. Dodatkową zaletą technologii Labelflash jest wykonywanie nadruku odpornego na czynniki zewnętrzne i pozwalającego na czyszczenie. "Wydrukowanie" etykiety laserem zajmuje napędom od 7 do 27 minut. Czas w jakim one powstają zależy od wybranej jakości lub ilości nadruku. 7 minut to czas potrzebny na etykietę całej powierzchni wykonaną w trybie „Fast mode” lub 1 cm paska w trybie "High mode". Niemal pół godziny zająć ma wypalenie opisu krążka w wysokiej jakości. Technologia LabelFlash nie obsługuje płyt CDR/CDRW (nadruk od strony danych) a także nie są dostępne na rynku płyty z możliwością nadruku od strony wierzchniej.
