La Salle Extension University (of Chicago) was founded by Jesse Grant Chapline in 1908, and was incorporated under the laws of the State of Illinois.[1]The university was in operation for over 90 years, from 1908 to around 2000. The university was an early pioneer in distance learning and often the subject of criticism from more traditional approaches to higher education in its day. However, the university was able to attract several hundred thousand students, many of them rising to positions of prominence such as: lawyers, judges, accountants, business and government leaders. Notables include: Gertrude Elzora Durden Rush, "the first black woman admitted to the bar in Iowa. "; noted historian Wilson Powell, Former Vermont Governor, Harold Arthur; Meyer Bloomfield, organizer of the vocational guidance movement; prominent psychologist, Hugo Munsterberg; Milton E. Crawford, who fought helped break the barriers of segregation in the US Air Force; Arthur Shores, Lawyer & Civil Rights Advocate and Bruce C. Clarke, a retired four-star general who was the Army commander-in-chief in Europe during a tense period of East-West confrontation [2][3][4][5][6][7] A prominent politician and presidential hopeful, former Vice-President Adlai E. Stevenson, taught at LaSalle Extension University in its business and law programs.
